What is intercultural competence?

Culture is a relatively broad concept, but it is useful to make a distinction between the big-C culture and small-C culture. The big-C comprises factual knowledge such as literature, music, dance, and painting. Small-C refers to comparatively non-tangible aspects such as attitudes, assumptions, beliefs, perceptions, norms and values.

Why do we need intercultural competence?

One of the reasons to improve intercultural competence is to expand students’ knowledge on global issue and skills to live with people from diverse background. Another reason is that living in the digital era, the unlimited amount of information is often paired with insufficient media literacy. According to Zuckerman (2014), people tend to interact with groups of people who have a lot in common online, and thus people are more likely to be manipulated by fake news from different resources.
